What the test measures

Speed (WPM)

Words per minute, using the standard definition: one "word" is five correctly typed characters. Only correct keystrokes count, so you cannot inflate your score by mashing keys.

Accuracy

The percentage of your keystrokes that were correct. Accuracy matters more than raw speed — fixing mistakes costs more time than typing carefully in the first place.

What counts as a good typing speed?

SpeedWhat it means
10–25 WPMBeginner — usually hunt-and-peck, looking at the keyboard.
26–40 WPMAround the average for most adults.
41–60 WPMSolid. A comfortable pace for everyday office work.
61–80 WPMWell above average. Typing is no longer slowing your thinking down.
81–100+ WPMProfessional territory — transcriptionists, programmers, writers.

See which keys are slowing you down

Most typing tests give you a number and stop there. This one records how you do on every individual key, then shows the ones you miss most often — and builds practice drills from exactly those keys. That is usually the fastest way to improve, because a handful of weak keys tend to account for most mistakes.

Tips for a better score

  1. Don't look at the keyboard. It feels slower at first, and it is the single biggest long-term gain.
  2. Start from the home row. Index fingers rest on the two keys with small bumps; the rest follow naturally.
  3. Prioritise accuracy over speed. Speed follows accuracy, not the other way around.
  4. Practise little and often. Ten focused minutes a day beats an hour once a week.
  5. Relax. Tense hands and hunched shoulders slow you down and cause strain.
